Jenny Mendoza

Little Notes Suzuki ECE Teacher

Jenny MendozaJenny Mendoza is a doctoral candidate in developmental psychology at the University of Oregon. Jenny was trained in Suzuki Early Childhood Education (SECE) instruction by Dorothy Jones and Sharon Jones, developers of the SECE curriculum.

Jenny’s doctoral research explores musical moments during the everyday lives of infants, investigating questions about the nature of music during infancy, how infants learn to process musical sounds, and the role of music in shaping infants’ learning and development. She works with Dr. Caitlin Fausey in the Learning Lab and with Dr. Dare Baldwin in the Acquiring Minds Lab.

A lifelong love of music led to Jenny learning Suzuki piano at age 4, and she studied with Carol Jilling for 12 years. She continued piano lessons in college, studying with Dr. Eugene Gaub and Susan Grace. Jenny also plays the French horn, which she began at age 11. She has studied horn with Jennifer Doersch and Robert Murray. She currently studies with Professor Lydia Van Dreel in the horn studio at the University of Oregon.

Jenny has experience working with children in a variety of settings. She worked for 5 years in early childhood education as a teacher’s aid at the Grinnell College Preschool and as a full-time teacher at the Colorado College Children’s Center. She worked primarily with infants (ages 6 weeks to 18 months old) and preschoolers (ages 4 to 5 years old). In addition, Jenny was a research assistant for 2 years at the National Institute of Mental Health, where she worked with children (ages 3.5 to 17 years old) who were diagnosed with pediatric bipolar disorder.

French HornJenny is thrilled to be teaching the Suzuki ECE class at the Eugene Suzuki Music Academy, as it combines her many loves: music, working with young children and families, and early childhood education. She is thankful for the opportunity to be part of such a wonderful program.

In her spare time, Jenny enjoys baking cakes, walking around beautiful Eugene, doing yoga, hiking and biking, playing her horn, and soaking up as much sun as she can.
